Rio Grande College Welcomes New Alums at Commencement

By Laura Nelson

Texas State University System Board of Regents member Donna Williams delivered the Commencement address.

Families and friends filled the Del Rio Civic Center Sat., May 16, to celebrate the graduation of 72 Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College students.

Dr. Michael Ortiz, RGC Faculty Senate President and Assistant Professor of Mathematics, carried the mace and headed the procession of faculty, administrators, and soon-to-be graduates to begin the spring 2015 Commencement ceremony. Dr. Paul Sorrels, Associate Provost/Dean of RGC, welcomed everyone and Cindy Torres Cardenas, the undergraduate with the highest grade-point average, guided the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Dr. Bill Kibler, SRSU President, delivered a greeting and introduced Donna N. Williams, a member of the Texas State University System Board of Regents. Ms. Williams delivered the Commencement address, adding inspiration by relating several personal anecdotes and offering career and life advice drawn from her more than 30 years as a mechanical engineer in both government and private sectors.

Each new alum shook hands with and was congratulated by Dr. Sorrels, Ms. Williams, and Dr. Kibler. Delia Ramirez, RGC’s Business Services Director, presented graduates with an RGC lapel pin as they exited the stage to begin the next chapter in their lives as Rio Grande College alumni.

Graduate students relax after being hooded. Colors on the hoods represent the student’s discipline (light blue is education) and are lined with official SRSU colors, red and gray.
