Castroville—Aubry Trevizo recently celebrated receiving her first scholarship.

The current Southwest Texas Junior College student had never applied for a scholarship before, but with encouragement from Bertha Benedetti, the SWTJC instructional aide at the site in Castroville, she decided to apply for a Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College Excellence Scholarship.

The Castroville Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Selection Committee was tasked with reviewing applications and recommending a student. Ms. Trevizo was chosen and was honored at the August Chamber of Commerce luncheon along with her mother, Victoria Castillo. Trevizo graduated from Castroville High School and once she has completed her junior college courses, plans to enroll at RGC and pursue a teaching degree.

Paul Sorrels, Vice President of Sul Ross State University Rio Grande College said, “RGC is very excited about the partnership with the Castroville Chamber of Commerce and the assistance from Cathy Tschirhart and the other members of the scholarship committee. Our goal is to make this an annual award for deserving students. Our partnership with the Chamber has made RGC and its employees feel very welcome in the community and we deeply appreciate the generous support we have received. We look forward to future opportunities with the Chamber.”
