The Master of Arts degree in History offers education beyond formal classroom learning and writing papers. Students on the way to becoming a professional historian are encouraged to join and take on responsibility in professional organizations, present research within and outside of the department, and take part in conferences. Graduate students choose either a thesis option or a non-thesis option.

Non-Thesis Track
Requirements
- Historiography (HIST 5301)—3sch.
- Historical Research, Writing, and Editing (HIST 5312)—3sch.
- United States History (HIST 5301, 5302, 5310, 5312, 5313)—9sch. Courses may be repeated for credit when topic varies.
- Non-U.S. History (HIST 5301, 5303, 5304, 5308, 5309, 5312, 5313)—9sch. Courses may be repeated for credit when topic varies.
- History, any—6sch. Courses may be repeated for credit when topic varies.
- Minor field—6-12sch
- Comprehensive Exams:
- To be completed in the student’s final semester of the graduate program.
- The student must select three comprehensive exam committee members or advisors, of which two must be in the field of History and the third in the student’s minor field.
- Written Exam—The student will complete three written exams in the fields of: American History, Non-American History, and the minor field. Each written exam will consist of at least one question, to be answered over a 4-8hr period. The student must complete the written component in all three fields within one week or seven days. - Comprehensive exams must be completed at least fourteen days before graduation.
- Oral Exam—The student may complete an oral examination and defense of written examinations and additional material in each field if the written component in any field is not deemed satisfactory by a committee member.
- The student must satisfactorily defend the written and/or oral exams in all three fields. If a student’s defense is not considered satisfactory, the student may repeat and retake the examination only once.
- The committee must meet requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences. The committee will designate the student’s achievement by awarding one of three grades: Pass with Distinction, Pass, or Fail.
Thesis Track
Requirements
- Historiography (HIST 5301)—3sch. Courses may be repeated for credit when topic varies.

- United States History (HIST 5301, 5302, 5310, 5312, 5313)—9sch. Courses may be repeated for credit when topic varies.

- Prospectus Writing (HIST 6301)—3-6sch, culminating in approval of the thesis prospectus by all thesis committee members, with oral defense if necessary.
- Thesis Writing (HIST 6302)—3-6sch. Prerequisite: HIST 6301 and consent of the advisor required.
- Thesis Defense: An oral examination in defense of the thesis will be conducted by the thesis committee after the final draft has been completed, no less than fourteen days prior to graduation. The thesis committee must meet requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences. The committee will designate the student’s achievement by awarding one of three grades: Pass with Distinction, Pass, or Fail.
