The Educational Diagnostician program prepares students for professional certification by the State Board for Educator Certification. Educational Diagnosticians are employed in school districts, hospitals, early intervention centers and contract privately.
Educational Diagnosticians use psychometric testing and other means of evaluation to determine eligibility for special education services. Educational Diagnosticians administer individual standardized test batteries, including intelligence, vocational, achievement, language, and behavioral tests. They also make recommend specific evidence-based interventions to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

Master of Education with Educational Diagnostician Certification
Duration: as low as 18 months
Credit hours: 30
Tuition: Approximately $9,500*
This is a 30-hour graduate program resulting in a Master of Education with Education Diagnostician certification. Students will be responsible for completing all required coursework, including a 160 clock-hour practicum in a TEA accredited school, comprehensive portfolio examination, university required practice examination, and state-mandated certification examination. Students may be TEACH Grant* eligible that could lower the amount of tuition.

Educational Diagnostician Certification
Duration: as low as 18 months

Tuition: Approximately $6,243*
This option is for students already holding a master’s degree in education or related field from an accredited university. All coursework leading to certification must be taken at Sul Ross State University and transfer credit will not be awarded for courses taken at another university. The typical Certification Only student can expect to complete a minimum of 21 hours towards certification. The student must apply to the university and meet the admission criteria. Upon acceptance, a transcript review will be performed by the major advisor to determine proficiency. Additional coursework may be required if an acceptable level of proficiency is not demonstrated by previous coursework and experience.

Dr. Lisa Thompson Sousa is an Assistant Professor and the Program Coordinator for the Educational Diagnostician Graduate Program for Sul Ross State University. Dr. Thompson Sousa is recently published with National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) regarding learning disabilities and assistive technology. She holds a B.A. in Communicative Disorders (Speech & Language Pathology) and an M.A. in both Special Education and Educational Therapy from California State University, Northridge. Her Ph.D. is from Texas Woman’s University in Special Education. She has 19 years of assessment experience for children of all ages and ability levels. Her research interests include early childhood assessment, assistive technology and the effects of trauma on learning.

Heidi Wassermann is an adjunct instructor at Sul Ross State University since Fall, 2014. Among other courses taught, Professor Wassermann currently teaches Assessment of Individual Intelligence (ED 5306). It is a course that continues to hold her interest due to the fact that, “It is a finite course about an infinite subject.”
She obtained a B.A. in Communication in 1987 from Spring Arbor University (Spring Arbor, MI) and went on to spend 20 years in radio broadcasting. She then obtained teaching certification from the Region 2 Education Service Center in 2005 and worked as a Special Education teacher for OSO Creek ISD (Corpus Christi, TX) and Alpine ISD. She transferred to the 588 Educational Cooperative in 2008 and started working as an intern Educational Diagnostician, completing her M.Ed. at Sul Ross State University in 2010.
