Welcome from the Provost

The dawn of a new day

In 1917, Texas State Senator Benjamin Berkley and his colleagues, after years of trying to secure a state university for the Trans Pecos/Big Bend region, telegraphed the Alpine Commercial Club from Austin with the good news that “[a]fter a long, hard struggle we have succeeded in securing passage of the Sul Ross Normal Bill…This means the dawn of a new day…”  Ninety-nine years later, the residents of the Big Bend-Trans Pecos, the Middle Rio Grande, and the entire state of Texas are the beneficiaries of the legacy of those visionary founders of Sul Ross State University.

Today, Sul Ross State University is a university of over 3,000 students.  Approximately 2,000 of those students are enrolled in the historic Alpine campus, while approximately 1,000 students are enrolled in the Rio Grande College campuses in Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Uvalde, and Castroville.  Together, Sul Ross State University (Alpine) and the Rio Grande College of Sul Ross State University offer 29 undergraduate and  21 graduate degrees that give our students opportunities to major in the sciences and mathematics, the humanities, the fine arts, agriculture, the industrial arts, the social sciences, the behavioral sciences, business, and education.  Our students also have the opportunity to participate in research through the Borderlands Research Institute and the Rio Grande Research, to perform in the productions of the Theatre of the Big Bend, the University Chorus, the Sul Ross bands, and to learn the lessons of travel through the SRSU International Studies program.

As Provost, it is my honor and privilege to serve as the chief academic officer of a faculty committed to excellence in instruction and in research whether the instruction is in the classroom, on the web, on stage, in the field, or on another continent.  We hope you will take time to learn of the opportunities available to you at Sul Ross State University, and we hope you make the decision to join our Lobo pack.
