Named for Lawrence Sullivan Ross, governor of Texas from 1887 to 1891 and president of A&M College of Texas from 1891 to 1898, Sul Ross State Normal College was founded in 1917.  Construction completed in 1920 and the first class was held that summer with an enrollment of 77 students.

100 years later, this institution, now called Sul Ross State University, is going stong, with over 3,000 students across the main and statelite campuses and online.
