VA Certification
In order to use your VA benefits, you must submit the Sul Ross Veteran’s Benefits Application for each semester you intend to use the benefits.
Additionally, you must provide the School Certifying Official with a copy of your VA eligibility letter.

Before certification, you will need to obtain a degree plan and register for classes. Once those steps are completed, contact a School Certifying Official (SCO) at veterans@sulross.edu.
In accordance with Title 38 US Code 3679 subsection (e}, Sul Ross State University adopts the following additional provisions for any students using U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs {VA} Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33} or Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Ch. 31) benefits, while payment to the institution is pending from the VA. This school will not:
- Prevent the student’s enrollment;
- Assess a late penalty fee to;
- Require student secure alternative or additional funding;
- Deny their access to any resources (access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities} available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution.
However, to qualify for this provision, such students may be required to:
- Provide Chapter 33 Certificate of Eligibility (or its equivalent} or for Chapter 31, VA VR&E’s contract with the school on VA Form 28-1905 by the first day of class.
- Complete the Sul Ross Veteran’s Benefits Application and provide it to the School Certifying Official
- Provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment as required by the Primary School Certifying Official.

VA education benefits are limited to a monthly stipend and/or payment of mandatory tuition and fees to the University. Benefits only pay stipends for the months of school attendance reported and the payments are pro-rated for partial (beginning and ending) months. VA educational benefits provide a monthly stipend dependent on rate of pursuit and benefit type. These stipends are based on current data and fluctuates by region.
Chapter 31 and Chapter 33 benefits offer differing ways to providing funding for books and supplies. Chapter 33 will issue a book stipend prior to each term while Chapter 31 provides all funding for books and supplies.
Other benefits such as Chapter 30,35, and 106 provide no tuition assistance or assistance for books and supplies.
Degree Requirements
To qualify for education benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the program you choose to pursue at Sul Ross State University must be one that is approved by the VA State Approving Agency. Important: If your program is not among those listed, then you cannot be certified to receive VA education benefits. Please note, the umber of program hours approved by the VA SAA may differ from the number of credit hours recommended by the department. Verify Attendance
You need to verify your attendance every month before payment is issued if you are attending an Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) or Non- College Degree (NCD) program and are receiving one of the following: Post 9/11 GI Bill®, Montgomery GI Bill ® – Active Duty, Montgomery GI Bill ®- Selected Reserve Reserve Educational Assistance Program – REAP. Basic Enrollment Information
- The VA does NOT pay for students to retake a class they have already passed
- The VA will NOT pay for classes that are not part of a student’s degree plan
- Students who take ALL ONLINE classes (including web-blended) will only be paid 50% of the BAH
- MUST report attendance each month to the VA in order to receive
Class Schedule Changes
If you add or drop classes, enroll in classes outside of your degree plan, repeat classes, enroll in short-term/non-standard term classes, these changes are required to be reported to the VA. Changes in enrollment can result in an overpayment that will be determined by the VA.
