SRSU Academic Continuity Support & Resource Guide

When classroom instruction is interrupted due to disasters or emergencies, it may become necessary to continue the delivery of instruction remotely. The SRSU Academic Continuity Guide provides faculty with instruction and recommendations for minimizing disruption to campus-based courses. The SRSU learning management system (Blackboard), along with other instructional tools and resources can help mitigate the disruption brought on by severe weather events, public health emergencies, and/or unsafe campus conditions.

This academic disruption planning guide will be a constantly updated and evolving site for SRSU Faculty. We thank our TSUS Shared Services Initiative partnership with Sam Houston State University and the SHSU Online team for preparing and sharing this information with SRSU.

Moving Online for Instructional Continuity (SHSU) - Both SRSU and SHSU create a corresponding Blackboard course (shell) for every active class every semester, even if the class is a scheduled face to face class meeting only on campus. In addition, all SRSU faculty have access to SRSU Blackboard and access to those course shells (for classes in which they are the instructor of record) every semester. This SHSU guide to "Moving Online for Instructional Continuity" is therefore just as relevant to SRSU faculty in facilitating your ability to transition a face-to-face class into remote delivery. The "Delivering Lectures" area mentions using Kaltura Capture and accessing the SHSU Video Production unit, both of which are resources SRSU faculty will soon have access to as our TSUS Shared Services Initiative rolls out towards the end of this spring.

General Emergency Planning Tips for SRSU:

  • Keep a list of emergency contacts for your department; chair; dean; and TA. SRSU faculty/Staff contact information can be found at our SRInfo Directory.
  • Be informed of how to receive Lobo Alert Information and official university emergency notifications. Online course alerts will be delivered on our Blackboard login page.
  • Download student contact information and course roster from your Lobo Online (Banner Self Service) should you need to get in touch with your students. Additionally, all blackboard course shells, whether utilzed or not, are loaded with your course enrollments every semester and can also be used as a means to obtain student info or contact your students using the course email feature.
  • Provide students written instructions within your syllabus on how you will communicate with them during crisis scenarios.
  • For SRSU online instructors: At the beginning of the term/semester, send your students a welcome Blackboard announcement/email that includes your contact information. Suggest that they hold on to the message until the end of the course in case they need to get in contact with you. Remind your students to download or print a copy of the syllabus.
  • Backup copies of any prepared teaching materials prior to the start of the term/semester in case you are unable to access the files on your office computer or laptop. SRSU recommends using your Office 365 OneDrive account for this. All SRSU faculty have access to 1 TB of cloud storage in your SRSU OneDrive account. Your OneDrive can be easily accessed from anywhere through your mySRSU portal dashboard. For more information on accessing and utilizing your SRSU OneDrive account, contact LTAC (SRSU Tech Helpdesk).
  • We also recommend storing your class content in your Blackboard course (as noted above on the "Moving Online for Instructional Continuity" link, all SRSU classes, including face-to-face, have a pre-built Blackboard shell so there is no need to request an online shell for your face-to-face class). For more information on accessing and utilizing your Blackboard course shells for storing class content, email:
  • Prior to a campus closure, verify you can access the following elements from home:
    • Email
    • Voicemail
    • Blackboard
    • mySRSU
  • Ensure your emergency contact information is up-to-date in Lobo Online (Banner Self-Service).
