RICHARDSON, Texas- Sul Ross (14-19, 10-10) and U.T. Dallas (18-17, 10-7) baseball teams split a Friday ASC doubleheader in Richardson.
The Lobos scored early and held the momentum for a 14-9 win in game one. U.T. Dallas scored 13 runs in the second inning and held off a Lobo rally to claim an 18-9 victory in the second contest.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a single, nine-inning game on Saturday beginning at noon.
Game 1: SRSU-14, UTD-9
The two teams combined for 27 hits in the first game slug fest.
Sul Ross reeled in six runs in their opening inning as Tim Johnson’s single to right field scored Wesley Moss. Tye Lindsey then scored on an infield throwing error before Johnson came across off a double by Chris York for a 3-0 Lobo lead.
York came through on a single through the left side before a double down the left field line by Jacob Sanchez plated Hartley and Bo Justin Martinez giving Sully a 6-0 lead after half an inning.
The Comets pulled to within three in their half of the inning trailing 6-3.
The visitors answered with six more runs spread over the second and third as Hartley posted his second RBI of the day with a double scoring York. Joseph Sanchez then singled Hartley and Jorge Marquez across for a 9-3 lead heading to the third.
A solo home run by Johnson extended Sully’s lead to seven before Jacob Pool scored on a single by Hartley. Another single by Martinez drove Marquez across giving Sul Ross a commanding 12-3 lead after two and a half innings.
U.T. Dallas narrowed the gap to seven in the bottom of the fourth before Martinez scored in the Lobo sixth off a wild pitch for a 13-5 Sul Ross advantage. Johnson then grounded out in the same inning scoring Moss for a 14-5 lead.
The home squad posted their final four runs of the contest in their half of the sixth and trailed 14-9 extending to the final score.
Sophomore reliever Isaac Gallego posted the win after 2.2 innings. The Alpine native gave up four runs off of five hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.
Hartley and Moss led the offense each hitting 3-for-5 with two runs scored apiece. Sanchez led the team with four RBI while Hartley and Johnson recorded three runs batted in each.
Game 2: UTD-18, SRSU-9
The Comets took the initiative with a run scored in their half of the opening inning. U.T. Dallas then unleashed a 13-run barrage in the second to take a 14-0 lead.
Sul Ross brought two runs across in the third as Hartley scored on a ground out by Moss. Sanchez then came across off another RBI ground by Johnson as Sully trailed 14-2.
The home team extended their lead to 15 with a three-run attack in the fifth.
Johnson cut the deficit to 14 in the sixth with his second solo homer of the day. A single up the middle by Lindsey in the same inning scored Marquez.
In the seventh, Moss scored on a single down the left field line by York before Pool homered scoring Marquez and York as the Lobos faced a 17-9 deficit.
U.T. Dallas plated their final insurance run of the game in the seventh leading to the 18-9 Comet victory.
Senior starter Peyton Marett posted the loss after 1.2 innings.
Offensively, Marquez hit a team-best 4-for-5 while Pool registered three RBI.
