Sul Ross State University has officially earned full membership in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, marking the successful completion of a three-year provisional membership process and a historic milestone for Lobo Athletics.
The NCAA notified the university on July 10 that Sul Ross State had satisfied all requirements for full DII membership, completing a transition that began in 2023 when the university accepted an invitation to join the Lone Star Conference.
With full membership, Sul Ross State’s student-athletes are now eligible to compete for national championships, administrators and coaches become eligible to serve on NCAA committees that help shape policy and governance, and the university becomes eligible to apply for a variety of grants and professional development opportunities available exclusively to active member institutions.
“This is truly a landmark day for Sul Ross State University,” said Amanda Workman, vice president for Intercollegiate Athletics. “Our coaches, student-athletes, athletic staff, university leadership and the entire campus community have invested tremendous time and energy into meeting the NCAA’s rigorous standards for membership. This announcement validates that work and opens the door for our Lobos to compete for championships while giving our department a voice in helping shape the future of Division II.”
Sul Ross has spent the last three years completing NCAA benchmarks related to governance, compliance, academic success, financial stability and student-athlete welfare.
President Carlos Hernandez said the achievement reflects the university’s broader commitment to excellence.
“Earning full membership is about far more than athletics. It demonstrates that SRSU has met nationally recognized standards of excellence while remaining committed to the success of our student-athletes in the classroom, in competition and in life,” he said. “This milestone strengthens our university, enhances opportunities for current and future Lobos and further elevates Sul Ross State’s reputation throughout Texas and across the nation.”
The move has already increased visibility for Sul Ross through membership in the Lone Star Conference, one of the nation’s premier DII conferences.
“This accomplishment belongs to everyone who believed in our vision,” Workman said. “From our student-athletes and coaches to our faculty, staff, alumni and fans, so many people have contributed to reaching this day. We’re excited for what’s ahead as we continue building a championship culture that reflects the values of Sul Ross State University.”
Sul Ross State sponsors 12 men’s and women’s NCAA varsity sports, including football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis and cross country.
