Paul Herring has been appointed as the Vice President of Advancement at Sul Ross State University by President Carlos Hernandez.
He replaces Jim Goodman, who announced his retirement earlier this year, effective Dec. 31.
Herring most recently served at the University of Missouri-St. Louis as Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, leading a team of 140 people across development, marketing and communications, exceeding annual goals by as much as $36 million, even in the midst of the pandemic, including the largest gift in the history of UMSL.
Before that, Herring served as Vice President of Advancement at Texas Tech University, transitioning the institution from a system-led fundraising model to a university model, directing two of the best fundraising years ever with over $93 million gifts in 2017 followed by more than $183 million in 2018, including $90 million in the contingency funds needed to create the new School of Veterinary Medicine.
While at TTU, Herring also served as the Executive Director of the Rawls College of Business, where he built a model for fundraising, external relations and marketing.
As Associate Vice President at St. Mary’s University, he led an effort to raise $13 million to renovate the baseball, softball, soccer and intramural fields, exceeding the goal by $2 million.
“Paul comes to Sul Ross with an impressive resume and record for fundraising,” said Dr. Hernandez. “He has visited Alpine and met with faculty and staff during the interview process. We have a unique university and Paul’s background reflects the ability to accept and exceed challenges. We are glad he will join us and look forward to success.”
Prior to his service to higher education, Herring served in various capacities at Western Union North America for nearly a decade.
“I am grateful to President Hernandez and the search committee for the opportunity to join Sul Ross State University,” Herring said. “I am humbled by the invitation and excited to join the leadership team. I see a very bright future for Sul Ross, and it is a great personal honor to be part of building that future.”
Herring earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from the University of Alabama. His official start date is Jan. 1, 2024.
