The Sul Ross Theatre Program kicks off its 98th season with the award-winning (I)sland T(rap): The Epic Remixology of the Odyssey, written and performed by visiting artist Austin Dean Ashford.
(I)sland T(rap) is a lyrical, mythical, one-man soul journey that mixes live music, poetry, and narrative. In Spring 2018, it was featured at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and recognized with the National Student Playwriting Award and the Hip Hop Theatre Creator award. (I)sland T(rap) just finished a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.
“This show is raw and beautiful and completely original,” says Chair of SRSU’s Department of Fine Arts and Communication Marjorie Scott. “Austin Ashford is a powerful storyteller and absolutely riveting to watch. This play is about his journey of self-discovery and what it means to be black in America. We’re honored to have him here.”
(I)sland T(rap) runs for two nights only: Friday and Saturday, September 20 and 21 at 7:30 pm in the Studio Theatre located in the Francois Fine Arts Building. Tickets are $10 for general admission, and $8 for seniors and children. Island Trap is rated PG (suitable for children ages 8+ with parental guidance suggested).
