The Sul Ross State University College of Education will welcome Leon Smith, the 2026 National Teacher of the Year, to the Alpine campus for a special visit focused on celebrating and supporting educators, on Monday, Nov. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in the Espino Conference Center.
Smith is an Advanced Placement U.S. History and AP African American Studies teacher at Haverford High School in Pennsylvania. He has more than two decades of experience as an educator, leader and mentor. His work emphasizes critical thinking, civic engagement, student voice and creating classrooms where students feel connected and supported. He is also an advocate for recruiting and retaining teachers and established an Educators Rising chapter at his high school to encourage students to consider careers in education.
The National Teacher of the Year Program, administered by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), recognizes outstanding educators from across the country and provides State Teachers of the Year with professional learning and opportunities to elevate the teaching profession. As the 2026 National Teacher of the Year, Smith is serving as a national ambassador for education, participating in school visits, speaking engagements, media appearances and conversations about the teaching profession.
During his visit, Mr. Smith will visit local school districts and meet with educators and school administrators, sharing his experiences and insights on teaching, leadership, and creating environments where teachers and students can thrive.
“I teach because it’s my mission to make a positive difference in society and to ensure teachers and students thrive in inclusive environments rooted in dignity,” said Smith.
The event is open to SRSU students, faculty, staff, area educators and community members. Refreshments will be provided.
Contributions to the College of Education’s annual National Teacher of the Year Program will help make future visits possible and provide continued opportunities for educators throughout our region to engage with nationally recognized leaders in education.
