(SAN MARCOS) – The Texas State University System Board of Regents has appointed Carlos Hernandez, Ed.D., as the 14th president of Sul Ross State University. Dr. Hernandez has served as interim president since June 4, 2022. The unanimous vote occurred during the board’s quarterly meeting at Texas State University in San Marcos.

“As interim president, Dr. Hernandez has made remarkable progress on efforts to grow and improve Sul Ross, such as strengthening student recruitment programs, expanding marketing campaigns to grow enrollment, and implementing efficiencies to reduce administrative overhead, said Chancellor Brian McCall. “We’re excited to see what’s ahead for Sul Ross under the leadership of Dr. Hernandez and his team.”
Prior to his arrival at Sul Ross, Dr. Hernandez served as chief financial officer and senior vice president for operations at Sam Houston State University, where he oversaw the university’s budget, financial reporting, human resources, facilities, risk management, compliance, and campus security and police programs. He has more than 34 years of public higher education experience, including leadership positions at The University of Texas at El Paso, the University of North Texas System and SHSU.

A West Texas native, Hernandez attended The University of Texas at El Paso from 1984 to 2009, earning a BBA in Accounting, and Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees.
