The SRSU Range & Wildlife Club Plant ID Team recently traveled to Minneapolis for the Society for Range Management’s 72nd Annual Meeting (Feb. 10-14). After taking a test covering 100 plant species from all fifty US states (and even different countries!), Sul Ross placed 10th out of 26 competing schools. Daniel Botello was SRSU’s highest scorer, finishing 35th out of nearly 150 contestants.
During a break from plant ID competition, Walter Flocke won the third annual Range Runners 5K Fun Run held on a snow-covered trail in 25-degree downtown Minneapolis.
“I was very proud of how the Team performed as it was a brutal test of national plants,” said Team Coach Roy Saffel. “And now we’re headed to another conference (Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society) on Wednesday just outside Conroe, Texas.”
Plant ID Team members are Katherine Haile, Daniel Botello, Walter Flocke, Erica Dunn, Dori Damerau, Cameron Wilson, and Cheyenne De Luna.
Also attending the event were club sponsor and Dean of the College of Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, Dr. Bonnie Warnock, and club treasurer and SRSU grad student, Carolina Medina-Nava.
