ALPINE – National Voters Registration Day and Constitution Day are being observed in the UC Mall on Sept. 20. This is an opportunity to have college students and city locals check their voting registration status or register to vote for Brewster County.
Sul Ross Professor Jessica Velasco wants to make registration quick and simple to reduce the amount of time taken away from a student’s schedule.
“We are about to be hitting the election season big time, so this is a good kick off to that,” Velasco says.
Registration will open at 11a.m. and will end at 2p.m. Those attending the event can also participate in trivia, enjoy a photo booth, and take home mini U.S. Constitutions.
Every fall semester Sul Ross gains an influx of new students who have recently reached the legal voting age. This day gives an opportunity for the incoming Lobos to be set to vote for the rest of their college career. This option is more convenient for students who cannot return to their home county to vote, especially since midterm elections are coming up so soon.
Early voting starts on Monday, Oct 25. If you miss the early voting window, election day is Saturday, Nov 8.
Young adults sometimes feel that making a big change can seem impossible, or even too overwhelming to imagine. Change won’t happen overnight. Each person is responsible for their own voice.
