The Sul Ross State University Guitar Ensemble and the Austin Classical Guitar Youth Orchestra (ACGYO) will perform in a fundraiser on Saturday, March 15, at 7 p.m. at the Museum of the Big Bend on the Alpine campus.
Featuring music by Graham Reynolds, Astor Piazzolla, Reena Esmail and more, Austin Classical Guitar’s season theme, “GIVE,” is built around the idea that every person has unique gifts that they can offer their community, and that the act of giving is cause for celebration.
Inspired by this theme, the ACGYO will perform in Alpine, Marfa, Fredericksburg and San Antonio to raise money for local organizations who are doing good things in their community.
Recognized as one of the most outstanding ensembles of its kind, the ACGYO is an auditioned ensemble of exceptional young guitarists from Austin. Under the direction of Dr. Joe Williams, the orchestra has performed for thousands in Austin’s most prestigious venues and in guest appearances at The San Francisco Conservatory, Outpost Performance Space (Albuquerque) Las Torres de Cotillas Flamenco Festival (Murcia, Spain) and the Antonio de Torres Museo de la Guitarra (Almeria, Spain).
The ACGYO is a program developed by Austin Classical Guitar, the largest nonprofit arts organization dedicated to classical guitar in the U.S. Founded in 1990, Austin Classical Guitar currently presents over 100 concerts annually showcasing the world’s greatest guitarists and regional talent. ACG’s education work supports over 4,000 secondary school students each week in central Texas and its curriculum is used all over the world.
The SRSU Guitar Ensemble is directed by Adjunct Professor of Music Nicolas Hurt.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at https://austinclassicalguitar.org/acgyo-give-tour-alpine-tx/ or at the door. The concert is free for Sul Ross students.
