Sul Ross State University is a grant recipient of $1,000 for the 2023 First Generation College Celebration Grant awarded by the Center for First Generation Student Success and the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE).
Approximately 50 percent of Sul Ross State students identify as first generation, meaning they are the first in their family on track to complete a four-year degree.
The grant provides funding for the university to raise awareness and celebrate the accomplishments of “first gen” students, staff, faculty and alumni. Grant funds will be used throughout the month of November for various celebration festivities.
SRSU will be celebrating with social media success stories, an Alpine campus celebration, a virtual First Gen Panel of students, faculty and staff discussing their experiences as first gen students, and various events hosted by student organizations including the “Let’s Taco About First Gen” with the Black Student Association, and a social event hosted by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.
Celebrations are open to all SRSU students, faculty, staff and alumni.
Events are scheduled as follows:
- Tuesday, Nov. 7, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: First Gen Celebration (University Center)
- Wednesday, Nov. 8, 3-4 p.m.: First Gen Panel (Microsoft Teams)
- Monday, Nov. 13, 7-9 p.m.: Let’s Taco About First Gen with BSA (Lobo Village Community Room)
