Sul Ross State University’s Omicron Phi chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national Political Science honor society, has been named a “Best Chapter” for the fifth consecutive year, continuing a remarkable record of achievement for the student organization.

The annual award recognizes local Pi Sigma Alpha chapters that are particularly active on their campuses and in their communities and that embody the organization’s mission to stimulate scholarship and intellectual interest in political science.

“The Omicron Phi chapter will be awarded along with five other chapters from institutions similar in size, out of over 830 Pi Sigma Alpha chapters,” said Tanya B. Schwarz, Ph.D., executive director of Pi Sigma Alpha. “We were impressed with the chapter’s achievements in developing activities promoting civic engagement, especially given the significant challenges faculty and students around the country continue to face.”

The award includes a $500 cash prize for the chapter and an additional $200 award for the chapter advisor in recognition of their service. “Best Chapter” winners also are announced across Pi Sigma Alpha’s digital platforms and featured in the American Political Science Association’s magazine, Political Science Today.

Dr. Jessica Velasco serves as faculty advisor to SRSU’s Omicron Phi chapter. She is an assistant professor of Political Science and Public Administration and also advises the Pre-Law Association, College Republicans and Young Democrats while serving as the university’s Faculty Athletics Representative.

The Omicron Phi chapter was chartered at Sul Ross State University in 1986 and has inducted more than 281 students.

Distinguished political science students are invited to join Pi Sigma Alpha. Upon induction, members receive a certificate of membership, lapel pin and honor cord to wear at graduation, along with other membership benefits.
