New members of the Sul Ross State University chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society for psychology students, will be inducted in person and online Friday, April 11, at the Bryan Wildenthal Library Conference Room.
They include Skylar Buchanan, Celeste De La Rosa, Frances Donnell, Charlette Hines, Grace Knight, Sofia Molinar, Karla Ramos and Alan Bernal.
Inductees must be a psychology major or minor with cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and at least nine semester credit hours of psychology coursework.
The purpose of Psi Chi is to mentor, inspire and bolster student excellence in performance and scholarship in all fields of psychology, and to participate in the advancement of the discipline.
Becoming a member grants undergraduate and graduate students access to at least 10 awards, grants, and scholarships, international recognition for academic excellence in psychology and mentorship in research and pursuit of careers in the Psi Chi network.
The society began as a fraternity in 1929 spearheaded by Edwin Newman and Fredrick H. Lewis, who were students at the University of Kansas. The society adopted the name “Psi Chi” to establish itself as an honor society and implemented chapter guidelines that spurred the growth of regional meetings and 73 chapters. The society later added organizational affiliates of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and has chapters all over the world, including Mexico, Guatemala, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Italy, Nigeria, and Turkey.
