Sul Ross State University International and the Texas Center for Energy Security (TXCES) will host a free Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics Summer Bootcamp July 28–29 providing students across Southwest Texas with a hands-on introduction to one of the nation’s fastest-growing career fields.
Students from Alpine, Eagle Pass, Del Rio and Uvalde are invited to explore careers in cybersecurity, digital investigations and artificial intelligence through this immersive two-day experience hosted at campus in Eagle Pass. Open to students in grades 7–12 and undergraduate students of all majors and experience levels, the bootcamp was designed and will be taught by SRSU faculty specifically for those in the region.
Participants will work through simulated cybercrime investigations using digital forensics tools, learn how experts detect phishing attacks and deepfakes, explore cryptocurrency tracing and compete in live cybersecurity challenges. Students will also receive a certificate of completion and gain exposure to career pathways in cybersecurity and homeland security.
“Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields in the country, and through our partnership with the Texas Center for Energy Security, we’re bringing it directly to Eagle Pass,” said Dr. Mainuddin Shaik, interim chair and assistant professor of cybersecurity. “No experience needed, just curiosity and a laptop.”
Organizers emphasized that no prior coding or technical experience is required to participate. Students only need a laptop and an interest in learning.
The initiative also supports regional workforce development efforts by introducing students to high-demand careers in cybersecurity and digital investigations. Nationally, cybersecurity careers continue to rank among the fastest-growing professions in the U.S.
The bootcamp will be offered exclusively in person and at no cost to participants. Lunch and snacks will also be provided.
