The Sul Ross State University Music Program presents “Spring Showcase,” a lively mid-week concert by the Chamber Ensemble and Banda Lobos, on Wednesday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Studio Theatre in the Francois Fine Arts Building.
The public is invited to attend the performance, under the direction of Dr. Milton Crotts. There is no charge for admission.
To begin, the SRSU Chamber Ensemble accompanies Caleb Baxley and his piccolo trumpet as he performs the “Fanfare Abblasen in C major” by Gottfried Reiche which segues into “Hornpipe” from Handel’s “Water Music.” Baxley will then perform Giuseppi Torelli’s “Trumpet Concerto in D.”
Hannah Reyes will perform “Sundown,” a guitar piece she wrote in 2024, which segues into “Greek Dance.” Following an instrumental transcription of J.S. Bach’s beloved aria, “My Heart Ever Faithful,” the Chamber Ensemble leaves the baroque era to share a medley of cowboy classics, including “Red River Valley,” “Turkey in the Straw,” “Home on the Range” and “Yellow Rose of Texas,” with Alayna Damm adding a “down home” touch on her harmonica.
The Chamber Ensemble will be joined by the Banda Lobos for a joint performance of Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time,” after which they will bring their own unique sound to the stage with vocals by Peyton Harris and Fernando Escapita. The Studio Theatre will rock with strains from “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” Van Morrison’s “Moondance,” Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.”
SRSU’s instrumental ensembles are comprised of university students, staff and faculty, as well as members of the greater Alpine community who contribute their time and talent.
Dr. Crotts joined the Sul Ross faculty in fall of 2024 as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Music Studies. Those who are interested in playing with the Chamber Ensemble or Banda Lobos can email milton.crotts@sulross.edu.
