The Sul Ross Skyline, the student newspaper, received three first place awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) conference in San Marcos April 10-12.
Alyn Covington won for Editorial Cartoons, Maya Tinajero placed for Editorials and Dawon Beard and Brooke Manuel were awarded for Web Design.
Skyline Adviser Sid Balman led a panel discussion on Freedom of the Press along with Eliya Alvidrez, its editor, and colleagues from Baylor University.
“We are punching above our weight for the fourth year in a row,” said Balman. “This is the largest organization of its kind in Texas.”
TIPA hosts a three-day convention each spring at locations around the state. The convention attracts anywhere from 300 to 600 students and faculty advisers and features more than 40 workshops and presentations by advisers and media professionals from around the country. The convention also features 30 on-site live contests for the student journalists to showcase their skills under deadline situations and in practical-oriented situations such as covering a fire.
