
Jorge Barrera, Jr., will deliver the Sul Ross State University International spring commencement address at the ceremony on Saturday, May 10, at 2:30 p.m. International Center for Trade in Eagle Pass.
Barrera was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. After moving to the U.S., he attended San Luis Elementary School, Memorial Junior High and Eagle Pass High School, graduating in 1997.
He attended Texas A&M University in College Station, where he became the Public Relations Chair for the Mexican Student Association, the president of Walton Hall and the president of the Residence Hall Association. He graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Barrera began his career with the Eagle Pass Water Works System in 2006 as the Regional Water Treatment Plant Process Engineer. Later that year, he became the Operations Manager, and in 2011, he was named the General Manager.
Barrera is the President of the Eagle Pass Independent School District Board of Trustees and of the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the board of the Eagle Pass/Maverick County Economic Development Alliance and on the advisory committee of the Rio Grande Watermaster Advisory. He is a member of the Four-Year University Committee, the Broadband Internet Committee and the Eagle Pass/Maverick County Legislative Days.
He and his wife, Sylvia L. Barrera, have been married for 18 years and have three children, Jorge III, Gael and Damaris.
