Sul Ross State University will host two free, hands-on STEM learning opportunities for middle school students across the Big Bend Region this fall.
Designed for 5th–8th graders, these Saturday camps will combine science, creativity and real-world problem solving with inspiration from Sul Ross faculty and community professionals. Both will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Museum of the Big Bend.
The first camp, “Peak Performance Saturday STEM Camp,” will be held Saturday, Sept. 13. It focuses on six life pillars—physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, occupational and financial. Students will:
- Explore strategies for physical, financial and mental performance alongside STEM career pathways in health sciences.
- Learn from inspiring leaders including Dr. Veronica Arredondo (DNP, RN), Mary Schwartze (licensed counselor) and Jawanna Sanderson (CPA).
- Enjoy hands-on activities, a free lunch, and valuable tools to help them reach their full potential.
Registration is free at https://sites.google.com/view/middleschoolsolarcamp/home.
The second camp on Saturday, Oct. 4, “H₂O & You Saturday STEM Camp,” dives into the science of water. Students will:
- Learn about water conservation and its global importance.
- Discover STEM careers in geology, biology and environmental science.
- Participate in interactive experiments such as coding irrigation systems.
- Be inspired by Dr. Kevin Urbanczyk and Dr. Chris Ritzi, experts in water and life sciences.
Both camps are part of Sul Ross State University’s commitment to fostering early STEM engagement and encouraging the next generation of scientists, innovators and community leaders.
