The Sul Ross State University Music Program will present “Spring Showcase” on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Francois Fine Arts Building Studio Theatre.
The concert features the SRSU Chamber Ensemble, performing classical works from the 1700’s, and Banda Lobos, performing popular songs from the 1970’s.
Among the pieces programmed by Milton Crotts, director of Instrumental Music at Sul Ross, are selections from G.F. Handel’s “Water Music” and G.P. Telemann’s “Tafelmusik.” Piccolo trumpeter Caleb Baxley will perform a concerto by Johann Friedrich Fasch, whose lively and imaginative music was in high demand throughout the 1700’s. Fasch numbered Handel and Telemann among his friends, and several of his works were presented by J.S. Bach himself. Scott Joplin’s ragtime favorite, “The Entertainer,” concludes the Chamber Ensemble’s performance.
Banda Lobos is joined by vocalists Peyton Harris and Jordan DeLaO to perform the Bee Gees’ original smash hit “Stayin’ Alive,” composed by the Gibb brothers for John Travolta’s cult classic, “Saturday Night Fever.” Concertgoers can also look forward to covers of Bruno Mars’s “Talking to the Moon,” ABBA’s “Money, Money, Money,” and Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” The concert closes with Mustang Sally, the timeless R&B song popularized by Wilson Pickett in the mid-60’s.
“Spring Showcase” will be the finale concert for Dr. Crotts at Sul Ross, where he is finishing two years as
an associate professor of music. “It has been a joy and an honor to conduct SRSU’s gifted student musicians and the wonderful faculty and community members who have contributed their time and talent to bring this music to life.” said Dr. Crotts. “I look forward to seeing an crowd on April 21 to enjoy and celebrate the culmination of their hard work.”
The public is cordially invited. There is no charge for admission.
