The Sul Ross State University Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), in partnership with the 588 Education Cooperative, hosted the 3rd Annual Field Day on April 8 at the recreation field.
Sponsored by the Office of Civic Engagement & Student Assistance, the community-focused event is designed to connect Sul Ross student-athletes with K–12 students with disabilities for a day of recreational and sports-related activities. The event emphasizes teamwork, accessibility and positive engagement, creating meaningful interactions between university athletes and local students.
Throughout the day, Sul Ross student-athletes volunteered their time to participate in adaptive games, physical activities and interactive stations alongside students from Alpine and Marfa schools. Now in its third year, SAAC Field Day continues to strengthen relationships between Sul Ross Athletics and the surrounding community while highlighting the role of student-athletes as leaders and advocates.
“It’s a very good way to get the schools engaged with Sul Ross and it brings a different side of the student-athlete out,” said Toni Sanchez, a member of the women’s soccer team.
Joseph Binder, a member of the Lobo baseball team, said, “This is a great experience to serve with SAAC and see the joy this event brought to the kids.”
The Office of Civic Engagement & Student Assistance supports initiatives like SAAC Field Day that promote service and experiential learning opportunities for students. Through events such as this, Sul Ross State University continues its commitment to community engagement and student development beyond the classroom.
