Sul Ross State University has received a transformative $500,000 gift from the Hardeman Family Foundation in Austin to support the university’s Presidential Plus Scholarship, expanding access to higher education for high school seniors across West Texas.
The Presidential Plus Scholarship, which includes tuitions, fees, housing and meals benefits students who are nominated by leadership from 18 area school districts, helping remove financial barriers and encouraging college enrollment in the region. The Hardeman Family Foundation’s investment will strengthen the program’s long-term impact, ensuring more students can pursue their academic goals close to home.
The gift is made in memory of the Prude family of Jeff Davis County, whose legacy is deeply tied to the region and to generations of West Texas families. The Prude family continues to own and operate Prude Ranch Summer Camp, a longtime destination for youth development and outdoor experiences in the Davis Mountains. Members of the Hardeman family spent their childhood summers at Prude Ranch, forming a lasting connection that inspired this tribute.
“This generous gift reflects both a deep love for West Texas and a belief in the power of education to transform lives,” said President Carlos Hernandez. “By investing in the Presidential Plus Scholarship, the Hardeman Family Foundation is opening doors for students across our region while honoring a family whose impact on this community spans generations.”
The Hardeman family’s ties to West Texas date back to the public service of their father, Dorsey B. Hardeman, who was elected in 1946 to the Texas State Senate representing District 25. At the time, the district included Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties. During his service, as Sen. Hardeman traveled throughout the vast district, his sons spent their summers at Prude Ranch, further strengthening the family’s enduring connection to the area.
