Sul Ross State University undergraduate students in the Rio Grande College of Business (RGCOB) completed internships with the City of Alpine this spring semester, assisting the city’s accounting department with a utilities billing system update.
Students recognized for their work were Josabeth Hernandez, Joshua Hernandez, Sebastian Lefeiloai and Ebenezer Malone. The interns were presented with certificates of appreciation by the Alpine City Council during its meeting Tuesday, May 5.

The internship opportunity was developed through collaboration between the RGCOB and community business leaders, providing students with practical experience in municipal finance and accounting operations while supporting an important city project.
“I am very thankful for the quick response that the dean and faculty provided when I called and said the City of Alpine needs some interns for their finance department,” said Phillip Carey, president of West Texas National Bank and a member of the RGCOB Advisory Council. “This is exactly what I was hoping would come out of my involvement on the council, where we can connect our business students with the community. These internships allow our future business leaders ‘real world’ experience while studying at Sul Ross State University.”
The partnership reflects the university’s continued commitment to experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for careers in business, finance and public service while strengthening ties with the surrounding community.
