Anthropology

The MA in Anthropology at Sul Ross State University is a 36-credit, thesis-based program designed for completion in two years. Each fall, the program admits a small cohort of six students, ensuring close mentorship and low student-to-faculty ratios.

Program Highlights:

  • Core Curriculum: 24 credits in foundational Anthropology courses

  • Electives: 12 credits (at least 6 in Anthropology)

  • Hands-on Training: Emphasis on practical skills in:

    • Cultural Resource Management (CRM)

    • Archaeological field and lab methods

    • GIS mapping (ArcGIS Pro)

    • Lithic analysis, rock art research, experimental archaeology

    • DNA analysis, 3D modeling, portable XRF

Academic and Professional Preparation:

  • Courses in Anthropological and Archaeological Theory

  • Focus on scientific literacy, data analysis, and technological competency

  • Electives covering human ecology, conflict, early peoples, and regional archaeology

  • Prepares students for careers in CRM, academia, museums, and applied research

The Center for Big Bend Studies coordinates an Archaeological Field School for graduate and undergraduate students who have the chance to work side by side with professional archaeologists. This hands-on approach to teaching helps students improve their skills in both traditional and cutting-edge field methods, including GIS mapping, profiling, pedestrian survey, and excavation.

The Archaeology Club is a registered and recognized student organization at Sul Ross State University. Founded in 2023, the goal of the Archaeology Club is to introduce students to the subject of archaeology and to archaeological research in West Texas. We also want to create a community to foster collaboration and information sharing among Sul Ross students. Undergraduate and graduate students from any major or program are welcome and encouraged to join and participate in Archaeology Club events.

The purpose of the SRSU Archaeology Club is to:

  • Introduce students to archaeology and archaeological research in West Texas.
  • Create a community to foster collaboration and information sharing among SRSU students.
  • Encourage student participation in hands-on archaeological activities and research.
