College of Agriculture, Life, & Physical Sciences

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER, MATHEMATICAL, & PHYSICAL SCIENCES

Chemistry

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry provides a strong foundation in general, organic, biochemistry, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. With flexible upper-level electives and a curriculum based on American Chemical Society (ACS) guidelines, the program prepares students for careers in industry, healthcare, public service, and research, or for graduate and professional school.

Students develop critical thinking, teamwork, research, and scientific communication skills while gaining hands-on laboratory experience and advanced training in chemical analysis and instrumentation.

  • ACS-aligned curriculum with lecture and lab components

  • Research opportunities in all major subdisciplines of chemistry

  • Preparation for graduate school or careers in medicine, pharmacy, education, and industry

  • Pre-professional advising for pre-med, pre-dental, and pre-pharmacy students

  • Option to pursue teacher certification

Research & Mentorship

Students collaborate with faculty on original research and present their work at regional and national conferences. Chemistry majors can also join the SRSU Chemistry Club, a certified ACS student chapter involved in campus and community outreach.

A Chemistry minor consists of 18 semester credit hours, including 6 advanced hours (3000–4000 level). Recommended courses:

  • CHEM 1311/1111 (General Chemistry I + Lab)

  • CHEM 1312/1112 (General Chemistry II + Lab)

  • CHEM 2401 (Organic Chemistry I)

  • 6 sch upper-division chemistry electives

This minor is ideal for students in biology, criminal justice, geology, animal science, or those preparing for professional health careers.
