Sul Ross State University is proud to announce Downing Power Consulting, Inc. as the Presenting Sponsor of the second annual Live at Gallego concert, a signature fundraiser supporting athletic facility capital improvements.
The concert, headlined by Texas country music star Aaron Watson with opening act Jason Martinez, will take place on Friday, Sept. 26, at the Pete P. Gallego Center in Alpine.
Downing Power Consulting, Inc. is led by Lawrence R. Downing, a proud Sul Ross alumnus whose story is rooted in West Texas, shaped by hard work, and driven by a deep connection to the university.
“I enjoyed every minute while I was there,” Downing said, reflecting on his years at Sul Ross. “Some of my best memories are from time spent in Big Bend, Lajitas, and weekend trips to the Fort Davis Drug Store.”
Born in Corpus Christi, Downing began his college journey at Stephen F. Austin University and at his hometown junior college before finding his academic home at Sul Ross in 1978. Living with his brother in the Graves-Pierce dormitory and later in a house across the street from campus, he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Geology, graduating in 1982. His time at Sul Ross was enriched not only by his studies but also by the friendships, adventures, and natural beauty of the Big Bend region.
After college, Downing worked in the oil and gas industry across Texas, navigating the difficulties of a volatile market. In 1999, he pivoted to the electric utility industry, and in 2008, founded Downing Power Consulting, a company that helps Texas businesses manage energy procurement and navigate the complexities of the deregulated electricity market.
“Sponsoring this concert is not just about giving back — it’s personal,” Downing said. “Sul Ross shaped my life in ways I’ll always be grateful for, and I’m honored to support the next generation of student-athletes and campus leaders.”
The Live at Gallego concert raises vital funds to enhance Sul Ross’s athletic facilities, creating a better experience for students, athletes, and fans across the Big Bend region. Last year’s inaugural concert brought hundreds of supporters together and raised over $80,000 for campus improvements.
