Gov. Rick Perry will deliver the spring commencement address at Sul Ross State University on Friday, May 8, at 4 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the Pete P. Gallego Center in Alpine.
Perry, who served as the 47th Governor of Texas from 2000 to 2015, remains the longest-serving governor in state history. During his tenure, he championed pro-growth economic policies that helped position Texas as one of the world’s largest economies and a national leader in job creation, energy production and innovation.
Following his time as governor, Perry served as the 14th U.S. Secretary of Energy from 2017 to 2019. In that role, he oversaw the Department of Energy’s expansive mission, including stewardship of the nation’s nuclear arsenal, advancement of scientific research, protection of the electric grid, and the promotion of American energy leadership worldwide.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Perry flew C-130 tactical airlift missions in Europe and the Middle East. He has continued his commitment to service through advocacy for veterans, particularly in advancing innovative healthcare solutions for those affected by PTSD and traumatic brain injury.
Perry is a graduate of Texas A&M University, where he earned a degree in animal science and was a member of the Corps of Cadets and a Yell Leader.
“We are honored to welcome Governor Perry to Sul Ross State University for this year’s spring commencement,” said President Carlos Hernandez. “His leadership, public service and commitment to innovation make him an inspiring voice for our graduates as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”
