Sul Ross State University will host the inaugural Texas Higher Education Kinesiology Summit (THEKS) March 30 through April 1.
Two days of presentations are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday (March 30 and 31) beginning at 8:00 a.m. in the Espino Conference Room of the Morgan University Center.
A day of outdoor activities is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1 including a round of golf in Lajitas along with biking and hiking tours of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
“The purpose of the summit is to share best practice and innovative solutions to challenges faced in higher education kinesiology,” said Dr. Chris Herrera, Chair and Graduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Kinesiology and Human Performance.
Herrera added that the summit will include didactic presentations, interactive discussion panels and local/regional tour activities.
Sul Ross graduate Dr. Joe Priest will be the keynote speaker on Monday, March 30. Priest is Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Wellness and Motor Behavior at Tarleton State University.
Dr. John Bartholomew will present the keynote address on Tuesday, March 31. Bartholomew is Chair of the University of Texas – Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.
Currently there are 24 presentation spots with topics including career readiness; curriculum design; equipment and facilities; marketable skills and recruiting.
“This is shaping up to be an informative event for the kinesiology field,” said event coordinator Dr. Billy Ray Jack. “We still have room for about 15 more presentations for people who are interested in speaking at the summit,” he said.
Registration for the summit is $200 per person. The fee includes lunch and dinner for the March 30 and 31 seminars. Participants will also be treated to a Star Party at McDonald Observatory on the evening of March 31. Transportation will be provided.
Wednesday, April 1 activities include a round of golf at the Lajitas Golf Resort ($125), guided mountain biking ($50) and hiking tours through Big Bend Ranch State Park. A free bus tour of the historic River Road will also be provided.
