The Sul Ross Theatre Program will present Red, a play by John Logan, October 18-27 at the Sul Ross Studio Theatre. Directed by professor of theatre Dona Roman, Red, set in the 1950’s and based on true events, tells the story of American painter Mark Rothko and his struggle to create a series of murals, newly commissioned for the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York. Rothko and his assistant Ken paint together and challenge each other’s limits, asking critical questions about the creation of art and the role it should have in society. Red is meant to portray the profound and sometimes unstable dynamic between an artist and his works.
“I chose to direct Red because it celebrates life,” says Roman. “All aspects of life are critical to appreciating the works of Mark Rothko and the works of most artists. It is a beautiful representation of what it means to be an artist, and what it means to be alive.”
