Arlington, Texas – Two Sul Ross State University students were awarded scholarships from the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association at their annual conference in Arlington July 21-23.

The $1,000 scholarships are awarded to deserving student athletic trainers across the state.

Brianna Zambrano (El Paso-Hanks) is a senior majoring in Kinesiology in the Athletic Training Apprenticeship track.  Zambrano will graduate this December.

She has completed over 1600 hours of apprenticeship and is planning to enter a master’s degree program in Athletic Training in the summer of 2023.

Brandon Mayers (Kilgore) is also a senior majoring in Kinesiology in the Athletic Training Apprenticeship track. He is expected to graduate in May of 2023 and has completed over 1600 hours of apprenticeship. Mayers is considering applying to medical school.

Both students are qualified for the Texas licensure exam to become Licensed Athletic Trainers and plan to sit for the testing this fall.

The requirements for the scholarships are as follows:

Must be an undergraduate student or non-credentialed (LAT) or an entry-level master’s student attending a Texas college/university.

Must be an athletic training student and/or admitted into the athletic training program.

Sponsoring athletic trainer must be a TSATA member.

3.0 minimum overall GPA and a 3.0 minimum curriculum GPA.

Must submit an unofficial transcript.

Must submit three letters of recommendation, one from the sponsoring Athletic Trainer and two from professors, administrators, coaches, advisors or a character reference.

Must be a full-time student in good standing with the college or university.

Must be pursuing a career in athletic training.

Must complete and return the application, transcript, and letters of recommendation.
