Sul Ross State University is preparing to take a major step toward the development of its new Eagle Pass campus with the selection of Cannon Design as the architect and engineer for Inaugural Classroom building on the new campus.
The approximately 40,000-square-foot building has a total project cost of $45 million and is targeted for completion in late 2028. It will include classrooms, laboratories, faculty and staff offices, and student support spaces designed to serve the growing needs of Sul Ross students in Eagle Pass. The Texas State University System Board of Regents is expected to consider the initial design concept in February 2027.
The new campus is located at the northeast corner of Foster Maldonado Boulevard and Main Street and encompasses 43 parcels acquired by Sul Ross in 2025. The property represents a significant expansion of the university’s physical presence in Eagle Pass and is intended to support the continued growth and evolution of programs and services in the region.
“When we acquired the land, we knew we were laying the foundation for something that would have a lasting impact on Eagle Pass and the students and families of this region,” said Dr. Carlos Hernandez, president. “The first building will give that vision a physical presence, but more importantly, it will create a place where students can learn, connect, conduct research and build their futures.”
Cannon Design is an international architecture, engineering and design firm with extensive experience in higher education. The firm’s education practice works with colleges and universities to develop learning environments that support evolving academic programs, collaboration, student well-being and institutional growth. Its Dallas office provides architecture, interior design, engineering and consulting services, with a particular focus on education, health care and science and technology.
The project is part of Sul Ross State’s broader commitment to building an independent four-year university to increase educational opportunities in the Middle Rio Grande Region.
This fall, SRSU is accepting and enrolling freshmen and sophomores for the first time in history, in addition to transfer students for upper level and graduate courses.
