The Sul Ross State University Department of Nursing has been awarded nearly $117,000 from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as part of the Nursing Shortage Reduction Program (NSRP).
The goal of the grant totaling $116,964 is to recruit, retain and enroll additional nursing students.
The funds will allow SRSU to purchase a birthing mannequin for the simulation lab, supporting student success and confidence as students become more familiar with maternal nursing care. Costs for professional development and classroom technology will also be covered.
The innovative use of simulation promotes education, recruitment and retention of students.
“Birthing scenarios will focus on psychosocial-cultural concepts encountered in patients through reproductive events,” said Dr. Minerva Gonzales, the director of nursing. “This supports student success and confidence as students become more familiar with maternal nursing care.”
Benchmarks of the grant include a 10 percent increase in enrollment in the nursing program by August 2026.
