Amanda Workman has been promoted to Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics at Sul Ross State University, effective April 1.
Workman will remain as Athletic Director, the role she has held since coming to SRSU in March 2021.
President Carlos Hernandez said she was promoted in recognition of the work and contributions she is already making toward advancing the mission of the university and toward enrollment.
“In particular, her effort and influence on the transition to NCAA Division II Athletics over the last two years have produced a positive outcome for both enrollment and academics,” said Dr. Hernandez.
After four years of leading the Lobos, the department has seen a 45 percent increase in the student-athlete population, increased graduation rates and GPA’s, and growth in the number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes, who must letter in their sport and earn a minimum 3.2 GPA.
Workman created and led the strategy through the Division II transition period while securing an invitation to the Lone Star Conference. SRSU is completing it second provisional year and its first year of competition in the LSC.
Before joining the Lobos, she served as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations at West Texas A&M University for 11 years.
While at WTAMU, Workman developed multiple capital campaigns, fostered corporate sponsorships, created branding guidelines and marketing campaigns, participated in national coaching searches and rebranded the athletic facilities. She played an integral part on the construction and fundraising team for Buffalo Stadium, named the top Division II football facility, which opened in the fall of 2019.
“The decision to move to Alpine and join the esteemed faculty and staff at Sul Ross State University has been a game-changer for me and my family. The opportunity to lead such an amazing group of coaches, administrators and student-athletes every day is one of my highest honors, second only to my role as a wife and a mother,” said Workman. “The people I have the privilege to collaborate with on a daily basis are unmatched. Thank you to Dr. Hernandez for fostering an environment of growth. I am so proud to be a Lobo and appreciate the honor of serving as one of SRSU’s leaders.”Workman attended West Texas A&M University and received both her bachelor’s (2006) and master’s (2009) degrees in psychology. She will complete her doctorate in Educational Leadership with an emphasis on rural education in December. Her research focuses on improving the experience for student-athletes as they transition out of athletics at the end of their career.
Workman and her husband, Jarrett Vickers, also an educator, are originally from Post. They live in Alpine with their son Jak.
