A free summer STEAM camp at Sul Ross State University starts Monday, July 7.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It’s an interdisciplinary approach to learning that encourages curiosity, creativity and problem-solving by integrating these five subjects. Unlike traditional education models, STEAM emphasizes hands-on experiences, critical thinking and collaboration to prepare students for real-world challenges in both technical and creative fields.
A variety of one-hour classes for students to explore geology, biology, theatre, music, movement and careers with university faculty and community leaders will be featured throughout the day Monday and Tuesday.
STEAM camp is a product of the community summit held this past January with Doug Griffiths, the author of 13 Ways to Kill Your Community, who suggested more youth engagement. Organizers announced that the camp would be open to just 30 students in 5th through 8th grades.
Dr. Jeanne Qvarnstrom, a professor of education, thanked Alpine Community Projects, the Lions Club, the Jan Smith Charitable Trust and the Museum of the Big Bend for their contributions, along with the presenters:
- Andrew Alegria, Assistant Professor of Music
- Thor Larson, Assistant Professor of Biology
- Jesse Kelsch, Assistant Professor of Geology
- Hugh Morrissey, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology
- Bret Scott, Associate Professor of Cinematic Arts
- Shelley Shackelford, Access for Students
