The Rio Grande College of Business at Sul Ross State University is redefining business education through a distinctive approach: programs designed and led by experienced executives, entrepreneurs and educators who bring the realities of the boardroom and marketplace directly into the classroom.
A recent example of this expertise in action is the publication of “Building Globally Resilient Value Chains for Sustained Operations” in the November 2025 issue of Supply Chain Management Review by Dr. Sumantra Sengupta, Dean of the Rio Grande College of Business. The article outlines a pragmatic framework for organizations and nations to build resilience across global value chains, an issue that has become central in boardrooms worldwide.
Dr. Sengupta’s insights stem from decades of leadership in global supply chain operations, turnaround and restructurings as well as management consulting. Prior to joining Sul Ross, he served as a partner with several international management consulting firms and as Group President for a multinational food and feed security company operating in 11 countries.
“The article was based on many projects I have led and companies I have run,” said Dr. Sengupta. “Resilience is the topic in boardrooms these days. What’s special about our approach at Sul Ross is that our faculty bring these types of lived experiences into program and course design, bridging the gap between theory and practice. That’s what differentiates our College of Business and all associated programs.”
Under Dr. Sengupta’s leadership, the Rio Grande College of Business is developing degree programs and courses that prepare students to address real-world business challenges across the U.S.-Mexico border region and beyond. By integrating research-based insights with field-tested strategy, SRSU’s scholar practitioners ensure that graduates gain both analytical acumen and the practical adaptability needed in today’s volatile economy.
“Our goal is to develop leaders who are not only academically strong but also ready to act decisively in uncertain times,” said Dr. Sengupta. “We design every course with that in mind because the problems our students will solve are already waiting for them in the real world.”
