Sul Ross State University joined campuses nationwide in observing Civic Engagement Day on Tuesday, Nov. 4, a dedicated day for student-athletes to step away from regular activities and engage in meaningful civic, community and service initiatives.
Under legislation adopted by the NCAA Division I Council in 2020 and complemented by Division II/III actions, all countable athletically-related activities such as games, practices, training and film sessions are suspended on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November each year. The purpose of this pause is to provide student-athletes the opportunity to register to vote, cast ballots, volunteer in their communities, engage in education or advocacy, and otherwise become more active citizens.
In partnership with Keep Alpine Beautiful, the Family Crisis Center, the Alpine Animal Shelter, Alpine Community Projects, the Food Pantry of Alpine and the Sunshine House, student-athletes participated in a range of initiatives designed to beautify the community, support local non-profits, and uplift elderly residents through letters of encouragement.
Projects were coordinated and sponsored by the Office of Civic Engagement & Student Assistance.
