Sul Ross State University has approved a new Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences, expanding academic opportunities at both the Alpine campus and Sul Ross State University International.
The program is designed to prepare students for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, biomedical research, public health and related fields. University leaders say the degree reflects growing regional demand for healthcare professionals and advanced STEM training across West Texas and the Middle Rio Grande border region.
A key feature of the degree is early research engagement for freshmen, providing hands-on laboratory and inquiry-based learning beginning in the first year. Additional research-integrated coursework, undergraduate publication opportunities and national collaborations will be phased in as the department grows.
“The goal is to give students meaningful scientific experience from the beginning of their academic journey,” said Dr. Ferhat Ozturk, program coordinator. “By combining rigorous coursework with early research engagement and strong advising, we are building a program that prepares students not only for professional schools but also for careers in the biomedical workforce.”
Dr. Dean Culpepper, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, emphasized the program’s long-term strategic impact. “This program represents a major investment in the future healthcare workforce of rural West Texas and the border region,” Culpepper said. “By creating a strong biomedical sciences foundation at both Alpine and Eagle Pass, we are building a direct pathway for students from our communities to enter medical, dental, pharmacy and allied health programs. Our goal is not just degree completion, but workforce transformation.”
The curriculum aligns with health-professional pathways, including preparation for programs such as the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP), and will be offered at both campuses to expand access to high-quality STEM education.
The program will also collaborate with regional high schools, dual-credit partners and community colleges to strengthen pre-health pipelines and expand early exposure to biomedical careers.
