The Sul Ross State University production of “True West” by Sam Shepard has been extended through this weekend, Nov. 13-15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Motion Capture Sound Stage behind the Kokernot Outdoor Theater on Loop Road.
A special fundraiser performance will be held on Friday, Nov. 14. Tickets are $30 and include a meet-and-greet with the cast, drinks and live music by Ross Fleming after the show. All proceeds benefit the Sul Ross Theatre Program student scholarship fund.
Set in California’s San Gabriel Valley, “True West” explores the fraught relationship between estranged brothers as they attempt to work together on a screenplay, each vying for a piece of the American Dream. Shepard’s play was a 1983 Pulitzer Prize finalist, and the 2000 Broadway production starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reill, was nominated for several Tony Awards.
“Anybody with a sibling, or anybody who knows someone with a sibling can connect with this show,” said Director and Associate Professor of Cinematic Arts Bret Scott. “’True West’ is comic, but at root it’s a story of two brothers coming to terms with wanting what the other brother has. Directing these actors has been an absolute joy. They really understand these characters at a DNA level. We’re doing this show in the Motion Capture Soundstage, so the audience will be very close and intimate. I think this will be an experience people will talk about for a long time.”
Tickets for Thursday and Saturday night performances are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors age 65+. As always, U.S. veterans and SRSU students, faculty and staff receive free admission. The show contains strong language and depictions of physical violence and is not recommended for children under 12.
