Sul Ross State University has been nationally recognized with two prestigious designations in the newly released 2025 Carnegie Classifications, positioning the institution as a standout among its peers.
SRSU is the smallest university in the U.S. to earn both Research College and University (RCU) and Opportunity College and University (OCU) — a rare dual distinction achieved by only 33 institutions across the country. Texas A&M International is the only other university in Texas to receive both, though it is in a higher enrollment category.
The new Carnegie classification evaluates institutions based on access – enrollment of Pell Grant recipients and underserved students, compared to the local population – and earnings, median income of alumni eight years after enrollment compared to peers with a high school education.
The university’s designation as an Opportunity College and University highlights its strong performance in student access and post-graduation earnings. With an access score of 1.81 out of 3 and an earnings score of 1.54 out of 3, Sul Ross ranks #3 among all 39 institutions in the Mixed Undergraduate/Graduate Small classification (less than 4,000 students) — outperformed only by Manhattan College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent, both in New York.
“I’m incredibly proud that these Carnegie designations recognize Sul Ross State University’s academic research rigor and inclusive mission,” said Provost Bernie Cantens. “They affirm the outstanding work of our faculty and staff in advancing research excellence, expanding educational opportunity for the students and communities we serve, and promoting social mobility throughout our region.”
With nearly $4.9 million in research and development expenditures since 2023, Sul Ross also earned the new Research College and University designation. Among the 216 institutions recognized, Sul Ross stands out as one of only three RCU designees in the Mixed Undergraduate/Graduate Small category and as the only public institution in this group to receive the RCU distinction.
The Mixed Undergraduate/Graduate Small institution status reflects SRSU’s balanced range of academic offerings. With strategic growth in enrollment and upcoming doctoral programs, the university is poised to rise in future Carnegie rankings.
