In conjunction with the Kiwanis Club of Alpine, the Sul Ross State University football team participated in the annual highway cleanup Saturday.

Around 40 bags of garbage were collected along a two-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 67.

This year marks the fifth year the Lobos and Kiwanis have teamed up for the highway cleanup project.

“We had between 35 and 40 football players show up for our highway cleanup,” said head coach John Pearce. “We also held a car wash event earlier in an ongoing effort to help foster community relations with our program,” he said.

Sul Ross wrapped up Division III Week which is held every April for student-athletes associated with NCAA Division III programs.

Division III schools and conference offices are encouraged to conduct a type of outreach activity that falls into one of three categories: academic accomplishment; athletic experience; or leadership/community service/campus involvement.

“This provides a good opportunity for our players to get out and show their faces in the community,” said Pearce. “It also helps to enhance the image of our department and our university.”
