Sul Ross State University has received nearly $2 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act in an announcement Tuesday, May 26.

Sul Ross applied for CARES Act funding on April 15 and received $1,800,000 on April 27.

Half of the $1.8 is designated for SRSU students while the other half is applied to the university.

Up-to-date figures show 1,700 Sul Ross students were eligible to receive funding.

As of May 18, $332,721 were awarded to 386 students across all four SRSU campuses.

“This is encouraging and I would like to see us continue to keep the momentum on this distribution to students,” said Chris Clifford, VP for Budget and Finance. “The CARES Act funding  has given nearly 400 of our students at all four campuses timely financial assistance.”

“Our committee is still meeting regularly and will continue to recommend grants for students until all of the funds have been distributed,” he said.

Students can apply online at https://srinfo.sulross.edu/cares-act/grant-request/. Applicants must be logged into their mySRSU account to gain access to the application form.

To be eligible for the grant the student must meet the following:

  • Must be enrolled Spring 2020
  • Not in Default on Federal loans.
  • Meet SRSU Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Requirements
  • Males must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Not in Overpayment for grants or loans.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or eligible Non-Citizen.
  • Admitted to a Degree-Seeking program that is not delivered exclusively online.
  • Spring 2020 grant application deadline: May 27, 2020.

Sul Ross was granted funding from the Department of Education under the CARES Act to help address the pressing financial need of students due to the disruption of campus course delivery from COVID-19.

Students who have been affected by the disruption of campus operations may apply for funds to help offset their expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses.
