Sul Ross State University Talent Search is offering a variety of programs to students this summer to help sharpen their skills and prepare for college.
Programs offered include virtual ACT and SAT Boot Camps through MasteryPrep, a STEM camp, virtual campus tours of Texas public college campuses, virtual workshops on college survival skills, and a virtual Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Boot Camp.
“Twenty-five students started an ACT Boot Camp with MasteryPrep on June 8. They took a practice test to give themselves a starting point and will be attending virtual classes for one hour a day five days a week for six weeks,” said Ida Hoelscher, Director of SRSU Talent Search.
“At the end they will take another practice test to see how much they have progressed.”
Hoelscher added that virtual tours will also include clips about student life on the campuses and tours of a dorm on the campus.
“These tours will go on all summer long with a different campus every week,” she said.
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) camp will be offered June 15 through a supplemental grant with the Department of Education.
“Students will get to build their own computers, learn to code, use a 3D printer and do a community service project,” said Hoelscher.
The “College Survival Series” starts on June 17 with SRSU Talent Search Staff presenting several different virtual workshops.
Topics covered include:
- What to pack for college
- How to survive dorm life
- Best places to study on campus
- How much does it cost to go to college?
A one day TSI virtual boot camp by MasteryPrep will be offered on June 30 Registration deadline is Friday, June 1.
“This is a four-hour workshop to try to improve your odds of passing the TSI test the first time you take it,” Hoelscher said.
Monday, July 13 is the virtual SAT Boot Camp.
“Students will be taking a practice test to give themselves a starting point,” said Hoelscher. “They then will be going to class for one hour a day, five days a week for six weeks.”
