Students considering graduate school at Sul Ross State University will have the option of earning a Master’s of Education in Educational Instructional Technology (EIT) beginning in the 2020 spring semester.

The new program allows graduate students and working professionals maximum flexibility according to Dr. Jennifer Miller-Ray, Assistant Professor Reading Specialist and EIT Coordinator.

Ray said the program gives students the opportunity to expand their career options while enhancing their existing job skills and juggling the demands of family/work/life.

“The use of technology in every area of training, instruction and education is only increasing,” Ray said.

“The skills needed to effectively integrate technology into learning environments are more and more in high demand.”

The EIT program involves five online courses that will be offered in the spring. First or second eight-week courses can be taken back-to-back.

“Positioning the EIT program courses back to back are designed to best compliment each other,” Ray said.

“The point is, with multiple first and second eight-week Ed Tech specialization courses being offered every long semester (and summer), you can adjust your course load to as many or as few as your work/life schedule will allow at the beginning and/or end of any long semester,” she said.

Courses include:

  • ED 6375 Foundations of Educational Technology_W01 – 21778 – (1st 8 Week Jan 13th thru March 6th)
  • ED 6381 Critical Issues in Educational Technology_W01 – 21780 – (1st 8 Week Jan 13th thru March 6th)
  • ED 6376 Inquiry-Based Research Methods_W01 – 21957 – (2nd 8 Week March 16th thru May 15th)
  • ED 6377 Instructional Design_W01 – 21779 – (2nd 8 Week March 25th thru May 15th)
  • ED 6382 Basic Applications of Media & Technology_W01 – 21781 – (2nd 8 Week March 25th thru May 15th)

According to its website, EIT is a field of study that investigates the process of analyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the instructional environment and learning materials in order to improve teaching and learning.

“The skills and knowledge gained through our specialization will allow future or current educators to enhance their job skills as well as seek new career paths in the field of education,” said Dr. Ray.

She noted that opportunities also extend outside of the academic area, such as in the fields of both corporate and military training and instruction.

“Coming out of this specialization, you should have the skills to become a K-12 technology coordinator, online distance Ed instructor at the community college and university level, instructional designer, corporate trainer / technology specialist, and more,” she said.
