Southwest Texas Junior College has implemented the use of electrostatic hypochlorous acid (HOCl) devices to disinfect their campuses as well as the Sul Ross State University campuses in Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Uvalde.

Custodial workers will use the devices to spray the HOCl disinfectant on classroom surfaces following each class period as well as a part of a regular cleaning and disinfecting routine. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration for manufacture by several companies, HOCl is effective in eliminating SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 as well as other viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

HOCl does not harm humans and animals; in fact, it is used as a no-rinse sanitizer for fresh foods. Medical and dental practices, agriculture, and water treatment facilities also realize the benefit of HOCl. Those using the electrostatic HOCl devices do not need any protective equipment and disinfecting a large room takes only minutes, making it a practical and convenient option for sanitizing surfaces.
